MOFA thanks US Senate Foreign Relations Committee for approving Taiwan...

2022/09/19

The approval of the Taiwan Policy Act of 2022 by the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee is sincerely appreciated by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Sept. 15.

Co-authored by Committee Chair Bob Menendez and Sen. Lindsey Graham, the bipartisan bill aims to bolster Taiwan’s defense capabilities to promote its security and ensure regional stability, as well as establish a robust sanctions regime to deter China’s aggression against Taiwan.

The legislation also affirms U.S. support for Taiwan’s democratic government and participation in international organizations and multilateral trade agreements, among other measures.

According to the MOFA, the strong bipartisan vote that underscores the friendship and unwavering support for Taiwan is deeply touching. The ministry is grateful for the strong leadership demonstrated by the two senior members of the U.S. Senate, it said.

The MOFA said it will remain in close contact with both the U.S. legislative and executive branches during the legislative process over the current congressional session.

The government remains committed to deepening ties with the U.S. so as to promote a free, open, peaceful and stable Indo-Pacific, the ministry added.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “The strong approval of #Taiwan Policy Act of 2022 by #US Senate Foreign Relations Committee is deeply appreciated! The move amid rising military threats from China attests to the strength of our ties & the bipartisan congressional resolve to ensure regional security.”
