President Tsai Ing-wen said greater public-private cooperation in Taiwan’s semiconductor industry is key to cementing the country’s position in the global economy Sept. 14.
 
No effort will be spared in maintaining the country’s strategic advantage in the field, Tsai said. To this end, the government continues to encourage and facilitate domestic investment while working with industry leaders and academia to spur innovation, she added.
 
According to Tsai, semiconductors are the beating heart of technologies of the future such as artificial intelligence, next-generation communications technology, electric vehicles, autonomous driving technology and smart manufacturing. Taiwan has the most comprehensive semiconductor ecosystem, as it is home to the world’s largest foundry and packaging and testing sectors, and second largest IC design sector, she said.
 
Tsai made the remarks while attending the SEMICON Leadership Gala Dinner in Taipei City. The gathering of industry leaders was also attended by prominent officials such as Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu and Minister of Economic Affairs Wang Mei-hua.
 
To invest in the future of this critical industry, the government and universities are joining the private sector in establishing several new semiconductor institutes in Taiwan, Tsai said, adding that this is part of efforts to raise the bar for talent cultivation and R&D and ensure the sector’s sustainability.
