MOFA welcomes Lithuania economic, technology delegation
2022/09/14
A Lithuania economic and technology delegation is welcomed by the government and people of Taiwan, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sept. 12.
Led by Karolis Zemaitis, Vice Minister of Economy and Innovation, the 28-member group comprises officials and business representatives from biotechnology and laser industries. The delegation’s five-day itinerary includes a banquet hosted by MOFA Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu and a visit to the Cabinet-level National Development Council and the Ministry of Economic Affairs, as well as engagements with research institutions and enterprises.
According to the MOFA, this visit to Taiwan follows other Lithuania delegations this year led by Vice Minister of Economy and Innovation Jovita Neliupsiene, Vice Minister of Agriculture Egidijus Giedraitis and Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications Agne Vaiciukeviciute.
Zemaitis’ visit further demonstrates that Taiwan and Lithuania stand united against authoritarian regimes seeking expansion through leveraging the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russian-Ukrainian war and concomitant energy and food crises to threaten democracy and freedom, the ministry added.
The MOFA said such support is apparent in an article published by Lithuania Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis Aug. 8 in U.K.-based daily news media, The Telegraph. In it he voiced support for Taiwan and said that U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s recent visit should not be an excuse for China to conduct live-fire exercises and naval maneuvers near Taiwan, nor should the free world allow Taiwan to become a second Ukraine and sacrifice the choice of the 23 million people of Taiwan to live in a free democratic society.
Taiwan and Lithuania share universal values of freedom and democracy, the MOFA said. The government is committed to working with the EU member state to create a win-win situation for both sides’ cutting-edge industries and boost mutual sustainable development, the ministry added.
