2022/09/12

President Tsai Ing-wen extends her deepest condolences Sept. 9 on the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on behalf of the government and people of Taiwan to the royal family and the people of the U.K. and Commonwealth.

According to the Presidential Office, over the course of the queen’s 70-year reign, she was much loved and respected by the people of the U.K. and greatly admired by the international community.

During World War II, the queen was the first female member of the royal family to serve in the military and resolutely led the U.K. amid the lengthy Cold War period and the current age of authoritarian expansion, the PO said. Throughout the changes and challenges of different eras, the U.K. was an indispensable pillar of global democracy under her leadership, the PO added.

The passing of the queen is a tremendous loss for both the U.K. and the global community, the PO said, adding that Taiwan and the U.K. will always remember her lifelong contributions to world peace and prosperity. Taiwan will continue to work with the U.K. on the basis of shared values and ideals, it said.

Similar statements were also issued by the Executive Yuan and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
