President Tsai Ing-wen said Sept. 1 that Taiwan is committed to further cooperation with the U.S. in high-tech industries to construct secure and resilient supply chains.
Tsai made the remarks while receiving a delegation led by Arizona Governor Doug Ducey at the Presidential Office in Taipei City.
Taiwan and the U.S. have set a benchmark in high-tech industrial supply chains, Tsai said, citing an advanced semiconductor fabrication plant set up in Phoenix by Hsinchu City-headquartered Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. in 2020.
The U.S. state will establish a foreign trade office in Taiwan to accelerate economic and trade collaboration. According to Tsai, the country is working with Arizona on several national defense and security initiatives.
Former Arizona state senators Barry Goldwater and John McCain were strong supporters of friendly Taiwan-U.S. relations during their lifetimes, Tsai said, adding that Arizona is also an important training base for Taiwan’s F-16 fighter pilots.
Tsai thanked Ducey for his assistance in facilitating a Taiwan-Arizona memorandum of understanding on higher education cooperation, adding that the government will continue to build alliances with the U.S. across the board while safeguarding peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.
In response, Ducey said his state shares economic strengths with Taiwan, specifically in technology and advanced manufacturing industries. The TSMC’s US$12 billion investment to the state has created over 2,000 jobs, he added.
The partnership goes beyond shared business priorities, Ducey said, adding that Arizona stands with Taiwan and seeks to build on many opportunities ahead.
