An agreement on diplomatic personnel training cooperation was concluded Aug. 30 in Taipei City between Taiwan and Guatemala, reflecting commitment to further cementing their bilateral ties, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Signed by Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu and counterpart Mario Bucaro of Guatemala, it will further the cultivation, understanding and exchange of diplomats leading to deeper cooperation between the two foreign ministries.
After the signing ceremony, Minister Wu conferred the Order of Brilliant Star with Grand Cordon upon Bucaro while being awarded the Order of Antonio Jose de Irisarri with Grand Collar by Guatemala’s foreign minister.
The honor symbolizes the strength of Taiwan-Guatemala friendship, Wu said, expressing appreciation for Bucaro’s staunch backing of Taiwan since he took office in February and his contribution to strengthening the allies’ partnership.
Wu thanked Guatemala President Alejandro Giammattei and the Central American ally’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their support during China’s recent military provocation.
In response, Bucaro said President Tsai Ing-wen and Minister Wu are perfect examples of 18th century Guatemalan diplomatic statesman Antonio Jose de Irisarri’s spirit of safeguarding sovereignty and contributing to human wellbeing. Taiwan’s long-standing assistance to Guatemala is deeply appreciated by the government and people, he said, adding that the country will continue working with Taiwan to create better tomorrows for all.
In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said: “Minister Wu & @MarioBucaroGT conferred state honors upon each other after inking a pact on diplomatic personnel training. #Taiwan-#Guatemala ties were the toast of the day at the ensuing welcome banquet for the @MinexGt delegation. Cheers to our deepening friendship!”
