A physical and virtual workshop on women’s empowerment after the pandemic was staged under the Global Cooperation and Training Framework Aug. 26 by Taiwan, the U.S. and St. Lucia.
Titled “Pursuing Inclusive and Gender-Equal Recovery: Empowering Women in the Post-Pandemic Era,” the event involved discussions on how to advance women’s competitiveness as entrepreneurs and employees in Latin America and the Caribbean while sharing the achievements of relevant programs implemented by Taiwan, the U.S. and other like-minded partners.
The workshop was co-hosted by Taiwan Ambassador to St. Lucia Peter Chia-yen Chen, U.S. Ambassador to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean Linda S. Taglialatela and St. Lucia’s Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre. The 100-plus participants included officials and experts from Taiwan’s allies in Latin America and the Caribbean and international organizations in addition to ambassadors and representatives to St. Lucia, with around 800 attending via video link.
According to the MOFA, keynote speeches were delivered by Kerri Hannan, deputy assistant secretary of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, and Virginia Albert-Poyotte, minister for the Public Service, Home Affairs, Labour and Gender Affairs of St. Lucia. The rest of the speakers came from Taiwan and 11 other countries, as well as St. Kitts & Nevis-based Eastern Caribbean Partial Credit Guarantee Corporation, the ministry added.
Launched in June 2015, GCTF has hosted 49 workshops with over 4,500 participants from 100 countries and territories. Since 2021, GCTF-affiliated events have been held overseas to boost cooperation in Africa, Europe, South Asia and the Caribbean, the MOFA said.
