ALEC resolutions supporting Taiwan welcomed by MOFA

2022/08/30

Two resolutions approved by Virginia-based American Legislative Exchange Council in support of Taiwan are warmly welcomed by the government and people, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Aug. 27.

The first encourages U.S. state legislatures to establish Taiwan Friendship Caucuses to strengthen bilateral cooperation across the board while backing Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations.

Equally positive, the second resolution urges the U.S. to invite Taiwan to join the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework, which promotes trade policy collaboration among member countries and could deter China’s aggression against Taiwan.

According to the MOFA, the government is committed to working with all sectors of the U.S. to advance mutually beneficial ties as China continues escalating its military threat against Taiwan, attempting to unilaterally change the cross-strait status quo and challenging regional peace and stability.

As the largest nonpartisan, voluntary membership organization of state legislators, ALEC currently comprises nearly one-quarter of U.S. state legislators as well as stakeholders from across the policy spectrum. In addition to previously passing several resolutions backing Taiwan, it presented President Tsai Ing-wen with the International Pioneer Award for Leadership in 2020.
