2022/08/01

Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu hosted a banquet for a delegation comprising members of Japan’s House of Representatives July 27 in Taipei City.

Attended by group leaders Shigeru Ishiba and Yasukazu Hamada, the event also included fellow lawmakers Akihisa Nagashima and Takayuki Shimizu.

During Wu’s banquet remarks, he thanked the delegation for its timely visit and said the government and people are deeply grateful for the staunch support shown by Japan for Taiwan in the international arena. This extends to opposing any unilateral change to cross-strait status quo, as well as maintaining peace and stability throughout the Indo-Pacific, he added.

According to Wu, Taiwan is committed to defending its sovereignty and will continue strengthening cooperation with like-minded partners to counter the threat of authoritarian regimes.

Wu also took the opportunity to again extend his condolences on the passing of Shinzo Abe and express his heartfelt respect for the former prime minister of Japan. In keeping with Abe’s ideals, Taiwan looks forward to expanding exchanges with Japan across a broad spectrum of areas such as cybersecurity, combating disinformation and misinformation, bolstering economic security, and building key infrastructure resilience and public health capacity, he said.

Ishiba, in response, said Taiwan and Japan share the universal values of freedom, democracy, respect for human rights and rule of law. The delegation is determined to boost two-way ties and defend democracy, as well as promote regional security and stability, he added.

In a tweet on its official account, the MOFA said “Minister Wu hosted a welcome banquet for the #Japan parliamentary delegation. Talk focused on #IndoPacific stability & security, as well as supply chain resilience. We thank the group for the timely visit showing strong cross-party support for democratic #Taiwan.”
