Premier Su Tseng-chang met with Ukraine students July 22 and pledged to provide further assistance for them during their studies, while praising Ukraine as a like-minded partner with commitment to safeguarding peace and prosperity in the global community.
Taiwan and Ukraine share universal values of freedom, democracy and respect for human rights, Su said and furthermore, the two countries face similar threats from savage and powerful neighbors.
Ukraine has already been invaded by Russia, while Taiwan faces intimidation through constant incursions by warplanes and warships from a huge, barbaric country which intends to use military force, Su said.
Su said that Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky’s leadership is admired by the world for the East European country’s determined resistance against Russia. Taiwan is willing and able to do its utmost to support Ukraine, Su said, adding that this is evidenced by the country’s donation of over US$45 million and more than 600 tons of medical supplies since the outbreak of war.
In April, the Ministry of Education cooperated with several universities to launch a project helping Ukraine students to come and study in Taiwan, Su said. This will build a bridge between the two countries for generations to come, he added.
In response, the Ukraine students’ representative expressed appreciation for the country’s assistance in providing academic opportunities and scholarships. The support and anti-war stance of the government and people of Taiwan amid the most difficult time for Ukraine was greatly appreciated, she said.
