Joint declaration on human rights cooperation inked by Taiwan, France

2022/07/15

A joint declaration on human rights cooperation was concluded by Taiwan and France July 12, underscoring the commitment of the two sides to expanding related exchanges across the board.

Inked by Chen Chu, president of the Control Yuan and chair of the National Human Rights Commission, and French Office in Taipei Director Jean-Francois Casabonne-Masonnave, the declaration paves the way for Taiwan and France to work even closer in defending democracy and safeguarding shared values.

Those overseeing the signing include NHRC Vice Chair Jao Yung-ching, NHRC members Tien Chiu-chin and Wang Jung-chang, as well as Pierre Goulange, head of the French office’s Political Affairs, Press and Communication Section.

According to Chen, Taiwanese and French societies place a premium on freedom, equality and fraternity. Human rights transcend national borders, and Taiwan looks forward to deepening cooperation and exchanging experiences with France in areas of overlapping interests, she said.

In response, Casabonne-Masonnave said the emergence of unilateralism has profoundly impacted common values. This is evidenced by the war in Ukraine, further highlighting the importance of international cooperation, he added.

NHRC operates under the auspices of the Control Yuan. Its brief encompasses reviewing grievances of abuses and discrimination, drafting the National Human Rights Report and advising government agencies on related policymaking.
