Taiwan gears up to boost post-disaster relief in Haiti

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Taiwan Foundation for Disaster Relief concluded a memorandum of understanding July 12 in Taipei City to help enhance post-disaster food security and support people’s livelihoods in southwest Haiti.
According to the MOFA, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck an area 150 kilometers west of capital Port-au-Prince last August, while tropical storm Grace lashed the southern region with torrential rains just days after. The disasters brought severe damage to the Caribbean ally’s infrastructure and caused a food shortage affecting nearly one million people, it said.
Two donations of Love from Taiwan emergency supplies organized by the ministry were presented to officials from the Embassy of Haiti at the MOFA headquarters in Taipei City later the same month.
Under the one-year MOU, TFDR will provide around US$500,000 for improving water conservancy facilities and restoring rice cultivation in areas impacted by the disasters. This will be done through the National Rice Seed Production Enhancement Project in South Haiti currently in progress by the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF), Taiwan’s foremost foreign aid organization.
The ministry said the people and government of Taiwan deeply sympathize with those affected by the disasters and will continue to work with all segments of society to help the ally in the Taiwan Can Help spirit.
Haiti is one of Taiwan’s key regional partners, with the two sides enjoying official relations spanning nearly 66 years, the MOFA said. The countries share a long history of fruitful collaboration in areas spanning agriculture, energy, infrastructure, public health and sustainable development.
