Sen. Rick Scott and his U.S. delegation touched down July 7 in Taiwan on a three-day visit aimed at getting up to speed on the latest bilateral security, economic and trade developments, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Highlights of the group’s itinerary include an audience with President Tsai Ing-wen, a meeting with Premier Su Tseng-chang, a banquet hosted by MOFA Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu and a virtual dialogue with Yang Jen-ni, deputy trade representative of the Cabinet-level Office of Trade Negotiations.
The MOFA said Scott is a staunch supporter of Taiwan who jointly initiated various pieces of legislation backing the country. These include the Taiwan Invasion Prevention Act and Deterring Communist Chinese Aggression Against Taiwan Through Financial Sanctions Act, the ministry added.
Scott also signed numerous letters urging a deepening of two-way economic ties, the MOFA said, and he was the first member of the U.S. Senate to visit The Taiwanese Representative Office in Lithuania after it opened in November 2021.
The MOFA said Scott’s visit to Taiwan is the seventh by a U.S. senator this year, following those by Sen. Tammy Duckworth in May and Sens. Lindsey Graham, Robert Menendez, Richard Burr, Robert Portman and Benjamin Sasse in April. It further demonstrates the rock-solid support of the U.S. for Taiwan and its 23.5 million people, the ministry added.
In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “Deputy Minister Tien extended the warmest of welcomes to #Taiwan’s steadfast supporter & great friend @SenRickScott. We wish the #US senator & his delegation a highly productive 3-day visit aimed at getting up to speed on key bilateral security, economic & trade developments.”
