MOFA expresses sympathies over shooting of ex-Japan PM Abe

2022/07/11

The government and people are shocked by the shooting of Japan’s former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in the city of Nara July 8 and strongly condemn the violent act, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Upon learning the news, President Tsai Ing-wen immediately directed Frank Hsieh, Taiwan’s representative to Japan, to convey sympathies to the Japanese government and the former prime minister’s family. On behalf of the government and people, the MOFA has also offered heartfelt concern through the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association.

As one of the country’s most unwavering friends, the former PM has been supporting Taiwan through the years while sparing no effort in promoting bilateral relations.

MOFA and Taiwan’s representative office in Japan will continue closely monitoring the situation and sincerely wish the former prime minister a speedy recovery, the ministry said.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “We’re deeply shocked & saddened by the shooting of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Such an illegal & violent act is utterly unacceptable & roundly condemned. The people & government of Taiwan extend their best wishes to the ex-PM, & stand with Japan at this difficult time.”
