President Tsai lauds Academia Sinica for advancing Taiwan’s development
2022/07/06
President Tsai Ing-wen said July 4 that Academia Sinica is advancing Taiwan’s development via strengthening the country’s R&D prowess in the international arena.
The invaluable contributions of the esteemed research institution are largely responsible for Taiwan’s top ranking for total R&D personnel per capita in the latest World Competitiveness Yearbook published by Switzerland-based International Institute for Management Development, Tsai said. Such commitment to excellence is paying significant dividends for the country and the people, she added.
Tsai made the remarks during the opening ceremony of the AS 34th Convocation of Academicians in Taipei City. Other high-profile attendees included former Vice President Chen Chien-jen and AS President James C. Liao.
According to Tsai, the government has budgeted US$32 billion for promoting energy transition before 2030 as part of efforts to achieve 2050 net-zero emissions. The research institution is supporting this undertaking by carrying out R&D in the critically important areas of geothermal, ocean and solar energy, she said.
Tsai also took the opportunity to thank Liao and AS for supporting related government policymaking.
Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine earlier this year, Tsai said, the research institution issued a statement of solidarity and offered scholarships for academics and students of the East European country. The timely gesture underscores the importance Taiwan places on freedom, democracy and peace, she added.
Established in 1928, AS is the country’s foremost research institution. It undertakes studies in the sciences and humanities, as well as fosters international academic cooperation and exchanges via an array of key projects with global applications.
