Taiwan, Turkish Red Crescent ink US$1M Afghanistan donation cooperation pact

2022/07/05

A cooperation agreement facilitating the use of Taiwan’s US$1 million donation for those impacted by the earthquake in Afghanistan was recently concluded by Taiwan and Turkish Red Crescent, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs July 1.

Signed by Volkan C. Y. Huang, head of Taipei Economic and Cultural Mission in Ankara, and Alper Kucuk, director general of TRC, the pact allows the Love from Taiwan funds to support the humanitarian organization’s relief operations in quake-hit regions of the Middle East country.

The MOFA said the donation is enabling the rapid delivery of food packs, medical supplies and other essential items. Near-future projects include reconstruction of damage houses and schools, the ministry added.

A magnitude 6.1 tremblor struck the southeastern city of Khost June 22, claiming more than a thousand lives, injuring over 3,000 and levelling 2,000-plus homes, the MOFA said. It is the deadliest earthquake to hit Afghanistan in two decades, the ministry added.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the ministry said “The #UN asks. #Taiwan answers. Rep. Huang & @Kizilay’s @AlperKucukTK signed a cooperation pact ensuring the government’s US$1M #LoveFromTaiwan donation swiftly improves the lives of those impacted by the earthquake in #Afghanistan. Real relief & rebuilding support is at hand!”
