Taiwan’s NextGen Telecom Delegation arrives in Washington

2022/06/30

Taiwan’s NextGen Telecom Delegation arrived in Washington June 25 as part of ongoing government work to expand cooperation with the U.S. in 5G telecommunication technology and its related industries.

Led by Minister of National Development Council Kung Ming-hsin, the group comprises 41 officials, experts and business leaders from the local 5G sector. The minister visited thinktanks Global Taiwan Institute and The German Marshall Fund of the U.S., and attended key SelectUSA events.

During his speech at the GTI, Kung said under the leadership of President Tsai Ing-wen, Taiwan has embarked on a new model of economic development by fostering innovative growth, prioritizing job creation and promoting equitable distribution of wealth, especially among the young generation.

Major projects promoting key industries and infrastructure development have resulted in a transformation of Taiwan’s economic and industrial structures, the minister added.

This is evidenced by the resilience of Taiwan’s economy amidst the challenging international situation, as well as the country’s contributions when global supplies came to a halt, Kung said.

During his visit to the GMF, Kung held in-depth discussions with officials from the State Department and experts from the thinktank, The Heritage Foundation and Peterson Institute for International Economics.

Fielding questions from the participants, Kung said given Taiwan’s high-tech prowess, China will incur tremendous costs if it imposes economic coercion on Taiwan. He also said the country is developing renewable energy to become more self-sufficient.

Kung added that Taiwan is able and willing to share its experiences in developing the country’s semiconductor ecosystem and fostering personnel with the rest of the world, particularly those in central and eastern Europe.
