2022/06/30

The Group of Seven leaders’ support for peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, as well as the peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues, is sincerely appreciated by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said June 28.

Contained in a communique issued after the G-7 leaders' meeting in Germany earlier the same day, the backing is the second such show of consecutive support from the grouping of industrialized nations comprising members Germany, Canada, France, Italy, Japan, the U.K., U.S. and non-enumerated member the EU.

Other attendees at the G-7 Summit June 26 to 28 in Elmau were the leaders of partner countries Argentina, India, Indonesia, Senegal and South Africa.

According to the MOFA, peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is a focal point in the region and around the world, citing similar high-profile statements released following the 2021 G-7 leaders’ meeting, Japan-Australia Summit, U.S.-Japan Summit, EU-Japan Summit and U.S.-South Korea Summit.

As a responsible member of the international community, the MOFA said, Taiwan will continue cooperating with the G-7 and other like-minded partners in defending rules-based order and democratic principles. This collaboration extends to promoting peace, stability, prosperity and sustainable development throughout the Indo-Pacific, the ministry added.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “Our thanks to the @G7 leaders for underscoring the importance of peace & stability across the Taiwan Strait & encouraging a peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues. #Taiwan will keep working with the #G7 & other partners in protecting shared values.”
