MOFA thanks Italian Chamber of Deputies’ Foreign Affairs Committee for WHO support
2022/06/28
A resolution adopted by the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Italian Chamber of Deputies in support of meaningful participation in World Health Organization activities, mechanisms and meetings by Taiwan is sincerely appreciated by the government and people, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs June 24.
The resolution stressed the country’s successful response to the COVID-19 pandemic and its long-standing contributions to the global health and medical community while calling to support Taiwan’s inclusion in World Health Assembly—WHO’s decision-making body—and WHO technical meetings. It was proposed May 6 and passed unanimously in a vote June 22.
According to the MOFA, Italian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Benedetto Della Vedova showed his support, which demonstrated that the country’s participation in WHO has consensus from the Italian government and parliament.
The resolution follows a motion approved by the Italian Chamber of Deputies March 16, which urged cooperation with the EU and NATO member states to review its Indo-Pacific strategy. Another resolution adopted by the lower house’s FAC April 5 called on Italy’s government to attach greater importance to cross-strait and regional peace and stability in the face of authoritarianism expansion, the ministry added.
Taiwan and Italy share universal values of freedom, democracy and respect for human rights, the MOFA said, adding that the government is committed to working with Italy to expand exchanges and contribute to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific while promoting economic prosperity and achieving Health For All in the post-pandemic era.
