MOFA conveys Taiwan’s quake condolences to Afghanistan
2022/06/27
The government and people of Taiwan extend sincere condolences to Afghanistan following the magnitude 6.1 earthquake hitting the southeastern city of Khost, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs June 23.
At least 1,000 were killed and thousands more injured, the MOFA said. The tremblor has caused great damage and severely impacted the lives of those in affected areas, the ministry added.
As a responsible member of the international community and force for good in the world, Taiwan is donating US$1 million in humanitarian aid to support recovery efforts, the MOFA said. This gesture is in response to calls from the U.N. and global relief agencies for coordinated action in assisting Afghanistan, the ministry added.
The MOFA said after in-depth consultations with relevant parties, Taiwan would not dispatch search and rescue teams to Afghanistan at this time. This decision reflects acute difficulties in transporting personnel and equipment, the ministry added.
Taiwan’s representative offices in neighboring countries are instructed to keep a close eye on related developments, the MOFA said, adding that the government will continue coordinating support efforts with international partners.
In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the ministry said “The government of #Taiwan is donating US$1M in humanitarian aid to assist with post-quake recovery in #Afghanistan. This #LoveFromTaiwan support in conjunction with our international partners will enable Afghans to overcome current challenges.”
