Science and technology cooperation talks held by Taiwan, Lithuania in Taipei

A delegation from Lithuania called on the Ministry of Science and Technology June 13 in Taipei City, with both sides pledging to deepen cooperation and exchanges in key sectors for mutual benefit, according to the ministry.
 
In his welcoming remarks, Deputy MOST Minister Lin Minn-tsong said academic exchanges between Taiwan and Lithuania have been progressing apace since the launch of a trilateral research mechanism in 2000 that includes Latvia. Over 60 joint projects have been launched under the initiative, he added.
 
Another salient example of the robust partnership in science and technology is the memorandum of understanding between the National Space Organization under the ministry’s auspices and Lithuanian startup NanoAvionics, signed during a visit by a Taiwan trade delegation to the EU member state last October, Lin added.
 
It is hoped that the two sides will leverage this robust foundation and continue enhanced collaboration on fundamental research and advanced technologies, he added.
 
In response, Lithuania Vice Minister of Economy and Technology Jovita Neliupsiene said in addition to holding shared values with Taiwan, her country is a front runner in laser technology and genomic research and possesses strong industrial clusters in both sectors. Her government looks forward to expanding cooperation with Taiwan in these key areas as well as in semiconductors, she added.
 
The two sides shared their respective experiences in innovative startup incubation and semiconductor personnel cultivation, with the MOST detailing the establishment of the Taiwan Tech Arena as an example.
 
The MOST said the following day the delegation will visit the Taiwan Semiconductor Research Institute and Hsinchu Science Park, both of which are under the ministry’s auspices, to gain a deeper understanding of Taiwan’s semiconductor industry and discuss nurturing talent with the TSRI.
 
Arriving June 12, the 10-member group is in the country for a four-day fact-finding trade tour. On its agenda are meetings with officials from Taiwan’s economic and trade ministries and agencies, as well as visits to companies in key industries.
