MOFA thanks EP for report in support of Taiwan

2022/06/09

A report adopted by the European Parliament supporting the peaceful cross-strait status quo, enhanced EU-Taiwan engagement and the country’s expanded global participation is sincerely appreciated by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said June 8.

Passed June 6 in a 474-60 vote with 80 abstentions, the report on the EU and security challenges in the Indo-Pacific expresses concerns over the situation in the Taiwan Strait, describes China’s threat to Taiwan as destabilizing regional security and stability, and opposes any unilateral actions to jeopardize the cross-strait status quo.

Calling Taiwan an important democratic partner in the Indo-Pacific, the report also reiterates its support for the country’s participation as an observer in global organizations including the World Health Organization, urges the EU to strengthen collaboration and exchanges with Taiwan, and welcomes Taiwan to play a greater role in promoting regional peace and security.

According to the MOFA, this marks the fifth time the EP has passed policy reports or resolutions backing Taiwan this year, reflecting the growing global consensus on the importance of cross-strait security and stability.

As a responsible stakeholder in the Indo-Pacific, Taiwan will continue working with the EU, its member states and other like-minded partners around the world to counter threats posed by authoritarianism, defend the shared values of freedom, democracy and respect for human rights and the rule of law while promoting peace and stability in the region, it added.
