2022/06/09

President Tsai Ing-wen received a delegation of lawmakers and officials from Slovakia June 7 at the Presidential Office, vowing to continue fostering bilateral ties between the two like-minded partners.

Arriving June 5, the 10-member group was led by Milan Laurencik, deputy speaker of Slovakia’s National Council, and comprised NC members and municipal officials from the Bratislava Region.

The Taiwan-Slovakia relationship has grown ever stronger over the past few years, Tsai said, citing the visit to the EU member state last October of a group led by National Development Council Minister Kung Ming-hsin and the subsequent visit of a delegation led by State Secretary Karol Galek of the Slovakia Ministry of Economy last December.

These have been complemented by visits to Slovakia this year by a semiconductor expert group from the Industrial Technology Research Institute and a delegation of executives from venture capital firm Taiwania Capital commissioned by the NDC, she added.

Tsai thanked Slovakia for supporting Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Assembly and for the resolutions passed by the Slovakia National Council expressing similar sentiments.

Taiwan and Slovakia have collaborated to assist Ukraine refugees forced to flee into Slovakia, Tsai said, adding that the government is committed to working with Slovakia and other like-minded partners to strengthen cooperation, create a resilient democratic front and contribute expertise to the world.

In response, Laurencik first expressed appreciation for Taiwan’s donation of face masks during COVID-19, as well as the country’s offer of employment and investment which help in further developing the economy. The two sides share universal values of freedom and democracy, he said, adding that Slovakia stands with Taiwan and will not compromise no matter what external obstruction or interference is applied.

Following his remarks, Juraj Droba, president of the Bratislava Region, said that the group will sign a partnership agreement between Kaohsiung City and the Bratislava Region. He is committed to promoting wide-ranging collaboration with Kaohsiung in areas spanning technology and trade while looking forward to reciprocal visits by young academics and other groups.
