MOFA thanks EP’s Committee on Foreign Affairs for report, amendment supporting Taiwan

2022/06/08

A report and related amendment adopted by the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs in support of Taiwan’s inclusion in international organizations is deeply appreciated by the government and people, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs June 6.

Passed June 2 in a 55-13 vote with seven abstentions, the report on the EU and the defense of multilateralism urges EU member states to participate more actively in international organizations. It also expresses concerns over some nonfree countries’ intentions to expand their influence in these groups via sponsorship while calling on the EU to deepen partnership with like-minded partners.

The amendment passed during the session is a resolution voicing support for Taiwan’s meaningful participation as an observer in the meetings, mechanisms and activities of multilateral organizations such as the International Civil Aviation Organization, Interpol, the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change and the World Health Organization.

In response, the MOFA said the report follows 11 similar resolutions passed by bodies including the European Parliament and parliaments of Denmark, Germany, Luxembourg, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and the U.K. this year.

The government will continue working with like-minded partners and organizations such as the EU, the EP and countries across the Europe to promote mutual interests based on the shared values of freedom, democracy and respect for human rights and the rule of law, the ministry added.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said: “Our thanks to @EP_ForeignAff for staunchly supporting #Taiwan’s participation in international organizations like the @WHO, @ICAO, @INTERPOL_HQ & @UNFCCC via the adopted amendment to the report on the #EU & defense of multilateralism. We’re #StrongerTogether!”
