Premier Su Tseng-chang received a delegation of lawmakers and officials from Slovakia June 6 at the Executive Yuan, pledging to continue advancing mutually beneficial ties between the two like-minded partners.
The relationship between Taiwan and Slovakia has been progressing apace since last year, Su said, citing the visit to the EU member state in October by a 66-member group led by Minister of National Development Council Kung Ming-hsin, and the visit by a 43-member delegation from Slovakia in December.
Su also took the opportunity to thank the Slovakian parliament for passing resolutions backing Taiwan’s participation in global organizations such as the World Health Organization, as well as recognizing the country’s achievements in managing COVID-19.
Equally important, Su said, Taiwan donated US$2.5 million and humanitarian aid to Slovakia to assist Ukrainians displaced by Russia’s invasion. The efforts by the Slovakian government and parliament in ensuring the delivery of 3.5 tons of supplies from Taiwan to those in need in Ukraine are also sincerely appreciated, he added.
Arriving the day before, the 10-member group was led by Milan Laurencik, deputy speaker of Slovakia’s National Council, and comprises NC members and municipal officials from the Bratislava Region.
Key events during the six-day visit include an audience with President Tsai Ing-wen and meetings with Legislative Yuan President You Si-kun, Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu and Vice Minister of Science and Technology Chen Tzong-Chyuan.
The group will travel to the southern port city of Kaohsiung and take part in the signing of a Taiwan-Slovakia Arrangement on Judicial Cooperation in Civil and Commercial Matters.
