2022/06/07
A delegation of lawmakers and officials from Slovakia arrived on a six-day visit June 5 at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Led by Milan Laurencik, deputy of Slovakia’s National Council, the 10-member group includes Juraj Droba, president of the Bratislava Region; Peter Osusky, member of parliament and chair of the Taiwan Parliamentary Group, MPs Anna Zemanova, Tomas Lehotsky, Miroslav Ziak and Andrej Stancik, respective representatives of parliamentary committees for foreign affairs, defense, finance and European affairs; Malacky Mayor Juraj Riha; and Malacky municipal officials Andrea Urmanicova and Michaela Kunska.
Key events on the delegation’s itinerary include being received by President Tsai Ing-wen, as well as meetings with Premier Su Tseng-chang, Legislative Yuan President You Si-kun, MOFA Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu and Vice Minister of Science of Technology Chen Tzong-Chyuan.
Other highlights are welcome banquets hosted by Wu and You, fact-finding tours of the southern city of Kaohsiung and the signing of a Taiwan-Slovakia Arrangement on Judicial Cooperation in Civil and Commercial Matters.
The trip follows the one led by Karol Galek, state secretary of Slovakia’s Ministry of Economy, in December 2021, the MOFA said. It reaffirms the commitment of Taiwan and its like-minded EU partner to deepening friendship and expanding exchanges across the board, the ministry added.
According to the MOFA, the two sides are making significant progress in strengthening two-way ties. This is illustrated by the recent passage of resolutions by the European Affairs, Foreign Affairs and Health Committees of Slovakia’s National Council supporting Taiwan’s participation at the World Health Assembly and the donation of 160,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses to the country last September, the ministry said.
In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA wished the delegation the “warmest of welcomes” and a “highly productive and rewarding” visit.
