Staunch support from Taiwan’s allies and like-minded partners in the Caribbean and Latin America for the country’s participation in the World Health Organization is sincerely appreciated by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said May 17.
Eight of the country’s allies called on the WHO to invite Taiwan to attend the WHA as an observer during the 75th edition of the annual meeting, the MOFA said. Expressions of support were also delivered by representatives from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela, the ministry added.
According to the MOFA, the parliaments of Belize, Guatemala and Honduras as well as Central American Parliament all passed resolutions in favor of Taiwan’s WHO bid. A total of 572 legislators from the 20 countries, the Central American Parliament and Formosa Club chapters in the Caribbean and Latin America have also expressed the same support through a steady stream of letters and social media posts, the MOFA said.
Furthermore, unprecedented support was shown through letters co-signed by 70 lawmakers from Brazil and 94 from Mexico urging the WHO to accept the importance and necessity of Taiwan’s inclusion in the global health system, the ministry added.
As a responsible member of the international community, Taiwan will continue sharing related know-how and medical supplies with the international community, the MOFA said, adding that only through a seamless global health network can the world achieve Health For All.
