MOFA thanks Czech Senate for resolution backing Taiwan’s WHA bid

2022/05/13

A resolution adopted by the Czech Republic Senate calling for Taiwan’s observer status at the upcoming 75th World Health Assembly is welcomed by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said May 12.

Passed May 11, the resolution reiterated support for the country’s participation in U.N. agencies such as the International Civil Aviation Organization, Interpol, the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change and the World Health Organization. Taiwan’s exclusion from international organizations limits the country’s contribution to the global community while undermining the right of its 23 million people, it added.

The resolution characterized Taiwan as Czechia’s reliable partner in the Indo-Pacific, adding that the two sides will expand cooperation in areas spanning culture, education, technology, tourism and trade.

According to the MOFA, passage of the resolution was witnessed by Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky and Health Deputy Minister Padek Policar which demonstrated the importance the Central European country places on their bilateral ties. Taiwan and the Czech Republic share universal values such as freedom, democracy and respect for human rights, the MOFA said, adding that the long-standing partnership is strengthened by resolutions calling for Taiwan’s WHO participation passed by the Senate last year and its Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defense and Security and Committee on Health and Social Policy in 2020.

A recent chorus of support from like-minded partners across Europe for Taiwan’s inclusion in international organizations has shown that the country is an indispensable force for good in the world, the MOFA said. The government is committed to working with democracies such as the Czech Republic to realize health for all and make further contributions to global sustainable development, it added.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said: “Our thanks to the #CzechRepublic’s Senate for passing a resolution urging #Taiwan’s meaningful participation in @UN specialized agencies such as the @WHO, @UNFCCC, @ICAO & @INTERPOL_HQ. Such staunch support in the lead-up to #WHA75 is deeply appreciated.”
