Two exhibitions featuring photographers from Taiwan and Lithuania got underway at National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts April 9 in the central city of Taichung, reflecting commitment on both sides to deepening their cultural ties and people-to-people exchanges.
During his opening remarks, Minister of Culture Lee Yung-te said the simultaneous staging of “Uncoverings: The Search for Identity in Lithuanian Photography” and “Covered Reality: Archival Orientation and Identity in Taiwanese Contemporary Photography” is a milestone development in Taiwan’s art history.
Although the two countries are over 8,000 kilometers apart, Taiwan and Lithuania share the same democratic development, Lee said, adding that the government and people of Taiwan are deeply grateful for the timely donation of COVID-19 vaccines by the EU member state.
The minister expects the exhibitions to help people from both nations to better understand each other’s culture and history and pave the way for further exchanges.
According to NTMFA, the Lithuania exhibition features collections from the Lithuanian National Museum of Art. It follows the development and exploration of identify in the Baltic state through 87 works by 21 artists who have contributed to the formation of Lithuanian identity at individual, regional, and national levels since the 1950s.
In a dialogue with the Lithuanian exhibition, the Taiwan exhibition focuses on the shared core theme of identity, a similar dilemma faced by both countries, the organizer said. 15 local artists from different generations use photography and extended technology to archive their understanding of reality and present divergent traces of identity development in the country, it added.
NTMFA said the exhibitions will be staged in Taichung till July 3, then move to the National Center of Photography and Images in Taipei City beginning in September.
