2022/04/12

Cabinet-level Environmental Protection Administration Minister Chang Tzi-chin is set to lead a delegation to Western Pacific ally Palau to attend the Our Ocean Conference, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs April 11.

Chang will represent the government of Taiwan as President Tsai Ing-wen’s special envoy, the MOFA said. He will deliver a keynote speech on tackling marine pollution in a plenary session April 14, the ministry added.

Other members of the delegation include MOFA Deputy Minister Tien Chung-kwang; Cabinet-level Ocean Affairs Council Deputy Minister Tsai Ching-piao; Ocean Conservation Administration Director-General Huang Hsiang-wen; International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) Secretary General Timothy T. Y. Hsiang; and officials from the Coast Guard Administration under the OAC and Fisheries Agency under the Cabinet-level Council of Agriculture.

The delegation will share Taiwan’s experience in areas spanning marine environment protection and sustainable development during the event, the MOFA said, adding that as a responsible Pacific state, Taiwan will ramp up pragmatic contributions while expanding exchanges with allies and like-minded partners from around the world.

In addition, the OAC has made 14 commitments spanning six major areas of action proposed by the conference, the MOFA said. These include formulating ocean solutions for climate change; creating sustainable blue economies; and achieving a safe, just and secure ocean.

This is complemented by private sector participation under the support of MOFA and the OAC, with representatives from Taipei City-based Acer Inc., Shinkong Synthetic Fibers Corp., and Shin Kong Memorial Wu Ho-Su Hospital set to join in the event, the MOFA said.

Co-hosted by Palau and the U.S., the seventh edition of Our Ocean Conference taking place April 13-14 is themed “Our Ocean, Our People, Our Prosperity.” It will draw on Palau’s rich tradition as an ocean society, focusing on islander perspectives and approaches to ensuring ocean health.
