A resolution adopted by the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Italian Chamber of Deputies in support of Taiwan is sincerely appreciated by the government and people, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs April 7.
Proposed by Paolo Formentini, deputy chairperson of the FAC, and signed by 23 members of the committee, the resolution was passed unanimously in a vote April 5. It called on Italy’s government to attach greater importance to cross-strait and regional peace and stability in the face of authoritarianism expansion while strengthening cooperation with like-minded partners in the Indo-Pacific.
According to the MOFA, the resolution follows a motion approved by the Italian Chamber of Deputies last month, which urged the Italy’s government to work with the EU and NATO member states to review its Indo-Pacific strategy. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Marina Sereni also showed her support, the ministry added.
Taiwan and Italy share universal values of freedom, democracy and respect for human rights, the MOFA said, adding that the two sides have close bilateral cooperation in areas spanning trade, culture, education and energy.
The government is committed to working with like-minded countries such as Italy to expand exchanges while contributing to the peace, stability and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific, the MOFA added.
