MOFA conveys condolences on passing of former US Secretary of State Albright

The government and people of Taiwan extend their deepest condolences on the passing of former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs March 24.
 
Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the U.S. has been directed to convey regards to Albright’s family, the MOFA said, expressing appreciation for her contributions in promoting freedom, democracy and respect for human rights around the globe.
 
According to the ministry, Albright was the first female U.S. secretary of state after serving as the country’s permanent representative to the U.N. during the administration of ex-President Bill Clinton.
 
After stepping down in 2001, Albright assumed the chair of Washington-based think tank National Democratic Institute and maintained a cordial and friendly relationship with TECRO, the MOFA said.
 
Albright was a friend of Taiwan, the ministry said, citing her remarks at a hearing before the U.S. House of Representative’s Committee on Foreign Affairs in which she said the U.S. should remain faithful to the Taiwan Relations Act.
 
President Tsai Ing-wen also expressed her condolences, tweeting that with Albright’s passing, the U.S. and the world lost a true champion of democracy who inspired many with her leadership.
 
In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “Our deepest condolences to the family, friends & loved ones of @Madeleine Albright. The 64th secretary of state will long be revered & admired for breaking the U.S. political glass ceiling & advancing democracy worldwide. May she rest in peace.”
