The government of Taiwan congratulates the South Korean people on a successful presidential contest in which the country’s next leader was elected in a peaceful and democratic manner, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs March 10.
Yoon Suk-yeol of the main opposition People Power Party defeated Lee Jae-myung of the ruling Democratic Party of Korea to become South Korea’s 20th president in a close race completed earlier the same day.
It is expected Taiwan and South Korea will continue cooperating across a broad spectrum of areas under the new administration, the MOFA said. This partnership is based on a foundation of shared values such as freedom, democracy, and respect for human rights and the rule of law, the ministry added.
As like-minded partners, the MOFA said, both countries are committed to building a more peaceful, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific.
In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the ministry said “Congratulations to the South Korean people on a successful presidential election. We look forward to working with the new government in further strengthening #Taiwan-#SouthKorea friendship & mutually beneficial exchanges while promoting regional peace, stability & prosperity.”
