A report adopted March 9 by the European Parliament on strengthening the EU’s response to foreign interference in democracy is sincerely appreciated by the government and people of Taiwan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
Passed the same day by 552 votes, the report recommends the European Commission refer to Taiwan’s experience and practice in raising public awareness of destabilization campaigns. It urges the EU and its member states to deepen cooperation with Taiwan to counter interference operations and disinformation attacks from malicious third countries.
Following the official visit by members of the EP Special Committee on Foreign Interference in all Democratic Processes in the European Union, including Disinformation (INGE) to Taiwan and the subsequent mission report, the delegation called on the EU to draw on Taiwan’s multifaceted strategy founded on cooperation by all branches of government and a high level of social participation, the MOFA said.
According to the MOFA, a resolution advocating closer cooperation against disinformation between Taiwan and the EU was passed earlier this year. In addition, a proposal to set up INGE 2 was unanimously approved, underscoring the commitment of the EP to combat disinformation, the MOFA added.
As a responsible member of the international community, the country will continue working with like-minded partners to defend against authoritarian expansion while upholding the shared values of democracy, freedom, human rights and rule of law, the MOFA said.
