Taiwan, US stage 2nd high-level dialogue under joint education initiative

2022/03/04

The second high-level dialogue under the Taiwan-U.S. Education Initiative wrapped up March 1, underscoring the commitment of the like-minded partners to strengthening cooperation on education.

Staged both in-person and virtually, the event was led by Taiwan’s National Security Council Deputy Secretary-General Hsu Szu-chien and Daniel Kritenbrink, the U.S. State Department’s Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs.

Other high-profile participants included Deputy Foreign Minister Harry Ho-jen Tseng, American Institute in Taiwan Deputy Director Jeremy Cornforth, Political Deputy Minister of Education Lio Mon-chi and U.S. Department of Education Chief of Staff Sheila Nix.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the dialogue centered on reviewing progress made under the initiative to date and developing a medium- to long-term collaboration plan.

Despite COVID-related restrictions, both Taiwan and the U.S. have been working closely on measures to advance cooperation in education, including increasing funding to U.S. Department of State-managed exchange programs and the Fulbright Taiwan program to allow more Americans to study and conduct exchanges in Taiwan, the ministry added.

The dialogue demonstrates the rock-solid commitment of the two countries to education, the MOFA said. Taiwan will continue working together with the U.S. to deepen bilateral partnership while upholding the shared values of freedom, democracy and diversity, the ministry added.
