2022/02/10

Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu and his counterpart Mario Bucaro of Guatemala held a call Feb. 8 to discuss bilateral, regional and multilateral matters, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the constructive conversation, Wu congratulated Bucaro on his recent appointment and conveyed gratitude on behalf of the government and people for Guatemala’s rock-solid support of Taiwan’s international participation. He further expressed a willingness to work with Bucaro in deepening friendship and expanding exchanges between the allies going forward.

In response, Bucaro said Taiwan and Guatemala are like-minded partners sharing the universal values of freedom and democracy. He also lauded the countries’ cooperation achievements spanning an array of projects benefiting the people and advancing sustainable development.

Guatemala’s foreign ministry will ramp up cooperation with the MOFA across a broad spectrum of areas, Bucaro said, adding that this is in line with his government’s commitment to speaking up for Taiwan and its contributions in the global community.

Bucaro also took the opportunity to extend President Alejandro Giammattei’s greetings to President Tsai Ing-wen, and invited Tsai and Wu to visit the Central America ally at a time of their choosing.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said: “Minister Wu & @MarioBucaroGT shared a friendly & productive call centered on issues at the heart of #Taiwan-#Guatemala relations. They committed to cooperating closely in expanding bilateral exchanges, addressing multilateral issues, & promoting peace, stability & prosperity.”
