VP Lai, Taiwan delegation make Los Angeles transit en route to Honduras

Vice President Lai Ching-te and the Taiwan delegation stopped over Jan. 25 in Los Angeles en route to Central America ally Honduras for the presidential inauguration of Xiomara Castro.
 
Upon landing at Los Angeles International Airport, Lai and the delegation were received in the charter by James F. Moriarty, chairman of Washington-headquartered American Institute in Taiwan, and Hsiao Bi-khim, head of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the U.S.
 
After deplaning, Lai and the delegation were greeted by Maria Fernanda Rivera, consul general of Honduras in Los Angeles, before being roundly applauded by Taiwan expatriates while leaving the airport and arriving at the hotel for the overnight stay.
 
Later the same day, Lai took part in several virtual meetings with 17 U.S. members of House of Representatives and Senate. These included Reps. John Curtis, Burgess Owens, Scott Perry, Mark Takano, Tom Tiffany and Sen. Ed Markey.
 
Lai also conducted a virtual with Taiwan expatriates. He offered his greetings on behalf of President Tsai Ing-wen and thanked participants for concerted efforts to deepen ties with the U.S. and the rest of world.
 
The commitment and dedication of Taiwan’s people living abroad are testament to the resilience of the country, he said. Such selfless sacrifices are sincerely appreciated by all segments of society, he added.
 
Lai, scheduled to depart for Honduras the following day, will attend the Jan. 27 presidential inauguration of Castro, take part in a state banquet and hold a bilateral meeting with the new president to discuss issues of mutual interest. The delegation will return Jan. 30 to Taiwan.
