MOFA thanks UK PM Johnson for supporting Taiwan

2022/01/28

U.K. support of Taiwan stated by Prime Minister Boris Johnson is sincerely appreciated by the government and people, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Jan. 27.

Chinese military flights taking place near Taiwan are not conducive to peace and stability in the region, Johnson said during Question Time in the House of Commons the day before. A peaceful and constructive dialogue by people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait is needed, he added.

According to the MOFA, the G-7 has released statements backing the cross-strait status quo three times under the U.K.’s 2021 presidency. These took place following the meetings of the foreign and development ministers in December, the Carbis Bay leaders’ summit in June and the foreign and development ministers in May.

Peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait are a focal point in the region and around the world, the MOFA said, citing the U.S.- Japan Summit, the U.S.-Republic of Korea Summit, the EU-Japan Summit and the Japan-Australia Foreign and Defense Ministerial Consultations.

In a tweet on the MOFA’s official account, the ministry said “Our sincere thanks to @BorisJohnson for spotlighting in the @UKParliament the destabilizing effect of #China's military flights near #Taiwan on regional peace & stability, as well as a need for peaceful & constructive dialogue between the 2 sides of the Taiwan Strait.”
