Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu addressed the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum and Memorial in Poland, via video during the launch ceremony of its Donor Wall Jan. 25, reaffirming like-minded commitment to promoting shared values of freedom and human rights.
Wu opened his speech by commending the museum for its tireless efforts in preserving Holocaust documents and historic sites. Taiwan has also overcome tremendous hardship in its transition to a vibrant democracy, Wu said, adding that the government is committed to reconciliation with the past while enhancing transitional justice.
According to Wu, Taiwan is deepening cooperation with the museum, as evidenced by a virtual reality program employing innovative technology and equipment to transform the sufferings of the past into accessible educational materials. Such cooperation is crucial in times when authoritarian revival gradually undermines democratic institutions, he added.
Taiwan is committed to advocating freedom, democracy and human rights, Wu said, adding that the country will continue to collaborate with like-minded partners to realize a better, more inclusive and peaceful future.
Other high-profile attendees at the event included Bob L. J. Chen, head of the Taipei Representative Office in Poland; and Piotr Cywinski and Elwir Swietochowski, president and chief financial officer of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation, respectively.
The Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum and Memorial preserves the world’s largest German Nazi concentration camps and extermination centers. Taiwan is the first East Asian country to cooperate with the museum and to co-establish a VR program with the facility.
