Vice President Lai Ching-te departed Jan. 25 for the inauguration of President Xiomara Castro of Honduras, reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening ties with the Central American ally.
It is a great honor to serve as President Tsai Ing-wen’s special envoy and extend the warmest regards of the people of Taiwan to the first female president of Honduras, Lai said. This trip underscores the importance the government attaches to bilateral relations, he added.
According to Lai, Taiwan and Honduras enjoy an enduring partnership spanning eight decades. The countries have supported one another through some of the most difficult times in their respective histories, he said.
Since the onset of the pandemic, Lai said, Taiwan has assisted Honduras with its coronavirus-combating efforts. Additional resources will be provided during the visit to demonstrate full backing for the ally and its new administration, he added.
Lai said Honduras is a firm supporter of Taiwan’s participation in global organizations such as Interpol, the U.N. and World Health Organization. This backing is encapsulated in the spirit of cooperation coursing through a raft of successful joint projects in areas such as agriculture, education and public health benefiting the people, he added.
Lai said the trip also serves as an invaluable opportunity to engage with other dignitaries attending the inauguration, as well as show the world that Taiwan is a force for good and trusted partner willing and able to make a greater contribution to the international community.
The government will continue deepening friendship and expanding exchanges with Taiwan’s allies in keeping with steadfast diplomacy and the approach of mutual assistance for mutual benefits, Lai said.
