VP Lai to lead Taiwan delegation to Honduras for presidential inauguration

Vice President Lai Ching-te is set to lead a Taiwan delegation to Central America ally Honduras for the presidential inauguration of Xiomara Castro, according to the Presidential Office Jan. 19.
 
Lai, departing Jan. 25, will represent the government and people of Taiwan as President Tsai Ing-wen’s special envoy, the PO said. His two-day itinerary in Honduras includes the presidential inauguration Jan. 27, a state banquet later the same day and a meeting with Castro, the PO added.
 
Other members of the delegation include Deputy Secretary-general to the President Li Chun-yi, Vice Foreign Minister Alexander Tah-ray Yui, Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the U.S. head Hsiao Bi-khim and PO Spokesperson Kolas Yotaka.
  
The visit underscores the importance the government attaches to Taiwan-Honduras relations, the PO said. It will help further cement 80 years of enduring ties, enhance bilateral cooperation across a broad spectrum of areas and expand Taiwan’s global engagement, the PO added.
 
It is expected the trip will also play a key role in paving the way for Taiwan and Honduras to continue cooperating closely in advancing sustainable development and inclusive prosperity, the PO said, adding that another benefit is promoting joint progress on global issues.
 
This is Lai’s first official trip since taking office May 20, 2020. He will return to Taiwan Jan. 30 before undergoing a 14-day home quarantine and seven-day self-health management.
