2022/01/13
The 45th Taiwan-Japan Economic and Trade Conference kicked off Jan. 11, underscoring the commitment of both sides to further strengthening robust relations, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Chiou I-jen, chairperson of the Taiwan-Japan Relations Association, said during his opening remarks that the virtual conference is particularly significant as the two sides continue respective efforts in combating COVID-19.
Japan’s donation of 4.2 million vaccine doses topped those from all other countries and reflects the deep bond with Taiwan, Chiou said. The government and people are deeply grateful for such an enduring show of friendship, he added.
Chiou also took the opportunity to reaffirm Taiwan’s commitment to joining the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership. Both sides should keep facilitating constructive dialogue in this regard, he said.
In response, Mitsuo Ohashi, chairman of Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association, said Taiwan and Japan share a long-standing supply chain partnership, especially in semiconductors. It is hoped such close cooperation will extend to other key areas like food exports from Japan, he said.
Staged in Taipei and Tokyo alternately since 1976, the annual event is the primary platform for Taiwan and Japan to discuss trade and investment issues. The two sides have concluded agreements via the platform on double taxation avoidance and trade promotion, as well as conducted cooperation in areas spanning e-commerce, industrial collaboration, intellectual property rights protection, and small and medium enterprises.
