MOFA welcomes Czechia push to strengthen ties with Taiwan
2022/01/11
The decision by the Czech Republic to expand cooperation and exchanges with Taiwan as contained in a new government program statement is sincerely welcomed, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Jan. 8.
Released the day before, the statement largely encompasses the Central European country’s relations with EU, NATO and Visegrad Group members. It also pertains to fellow democracies such as Taiwan, India, Israel, Japan, South Korea, the U.K. and U.S.
In response, the MOFA said Taiwan and the Czech Republic enjoy a close friendship based on shared values like freedom, democracy, and respect for human rights and rule of law. The statement further demonstrates the importance the EU member state attaches to the development of two-way ties, the ministry added.
The statement follows the Taiwan investment and trade delegation’s visit to the Czech Republic last October. Led by National Development Council Minister Kung Ming-hsin, the group inked five memorandums of understanding on cooperation in the fields of catalyst technology, cybersecurity, green energy, smart machinery and space, the MOFA said.
According to the ministry, the government will continue working with the Czech Republic in areas spanning culture, economy, education, investment, pandemic management, science, technology and trade while deepening exchanges with other like-minded European countries.
