Taiwan, Nigeria stage 2022 business forum

2022/01/10

A business forum was staged Jan. 6 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Nigeria Trade Office in Taiwan as part of joint efforts to advance strategic cooperation in trade and investment.

Opened by Vice Foreign Minister Alexander Tah-ray Yui and Nigeria’s Deputy Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment Evelyn N. Ngige, the day-long event involved 100-plus representatives from the academic and business sectors of both countries.

Yui said during his opening remarks that Taiwan and Nigeria boast complementary strengths in a wide range of sectors spanning auto parts, e-commerce, food processing, machine tools and Muslim-majority market development.

The forum is a peerless platform for businesses from both sides to expand existing cooperation and tap new opportunities arising from the African Continental Free Trade Area agreement, Yui added.

As a solid legal framework is key to strengthening business ties, Yui said, the governments of Taiwan and Nigeria will work to renew the bilateral investment promotion and protection agreement first concluded in 1994.

In response, Ngige said the event enables the two sides to review existing cooperation projects and seek further opportunities for mutually beneficial outcomes.

It is hoped relations will continue advancing for the benefit of the people, Ngige said, adding that reciprocal visits are expected to recommence when the pandemic is under control.

According to the MOFA, the forum is part of the government’s Africa Project aimed at bolstering Taiwan’s trade with the Kingdom of Eswatini and neighboring countries. It was launched following President Tsai Ing-wen’s state visit to the diplomatic ally in April 2018.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “Fair & equitable trade promotes prosperity & sustainable development. Vice Minister Yui, @TradeInvestNG Deputy Minister Ngige & 100+ industry representatives put this principle into practice at the #Taiwan-#Nigeria Business Forum. Many thanks to all for the successful event!”
