President Tsai reaffirms commitment to sports development in Taiwan

2022/01/06

President Tsai Ing-wen said Jan. 3 that the government is leaving no stone unturned in promoting sports development and backing athletes representing Taiwan in the international arena.

Public and private sector efforts are helping ensure sports such as marathon are growing in popularity with the people, Tsai said. Athletes and coaching teams are benefiting from strong sponsorship and support, she added.

The great performances and fighting spirit of Taiwan’s athletes in global competitions have done the country proud, Tsai said, adding that they are sincerely appreciated by the government and people.

Tsai made the remarks while receiving a delegation of Taiwan marathon runners at the Presidential Office in Taipei City. These included Lo Wei-ming, silver medalist at the Sri Chinmoy Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile Race staged last September and October in New York, as well as winners of the Taiwania Ultra Trail race held last month in Yilan County, northeastern Taiwan.

According to Tsai, the image of Lo waving the national flag at the end of the 52-day road race left a lasting impression on the people. The 58-year-old is the only athlete from Asia to complete the event in its 25-year history.

The government will continue implementing all requisite measures to assist the country’s top-tier athletes so they can produce even better performances abroad and inspire the people to strive for greater accomplishments in all aspects of life, Tsai said.
