President Tsai Ing-wen said Dec. 27 that the government is committed to strengthening the competitiveness of Taiwan’s semiconductor industry for years to come through expanded industry-academia cooperation.
 
The government is sparing no effort in maintaining the country’s leading position in the semiconductor industry, Tsai said. This is evidenced by the immediate approval for the establishment of four semiconductor research institutes by the Ministry of Education following the passing of the act for National Key Fields Industry-University Cooperation and Skilled Personnel Training in May, she added.
 
National Cheng Kung University was the first university to open such a school, followed by National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, National Taiwan University and National Tsing Hua University, Tsai said. Nurturing new talent is key to advancing the country’s technology industry, she added.
 
Tsai made the remarks while attending the inauguration ceremony of the College of Semiconductor Research at NTHU in Hsinchu City, northern Taiwan. Other high-profile attendees at the event included Minister of Education Pan Wen-chung, Hsinchu Mayor Lin Chih-chien, NTHU President Hocheng Hong and Burn J. Lin, dean of CoSR, NTHU.
 
Tsai also took the opportunity to thank the semiconductor industry for their involvement in and provision of funding for the four institutes in Taiwan, as well as NTHU for their long-term commitment to research and fostering talent.
