MOFA lauds Lithuania for backing Taiwan

2021/12/20

The Lithuanian government’s commitment to standing with Taiwan is sincerely appreciated by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Dec. 15.

Despite persistent economic and diplomatic pressure from China, Lithuania remains resolute to developing relations with Taiwan, the MOFA said. The EU member state’s unwavering backing for the country merits the highest praise from all segments of society, the ministry added.

Taiwan’s 23.5 million people cherish such support, the MOFA said, adding that the country stands shoulder to shoulder with its like-minded partner.

The ministry’s remarks follow the decision of its Lithuanian counterpart to withdraw the Baltic country’s remaining diplomats from China and conduct embassy operations remotely.

According to the MOFA, Taiwan will continue to work with allies and friends around the world to enhance collaboration and strengthen the resilience of the global democratic alliance.

At the same time, the ministry said, it is hoped Taiwan and Lithuania will further deepen their partnership in areas such as culture, economy, education, and science and technology for the benefit and prosperity of people.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “We highly commend #Lithuania for its nonnegotiable stance on pursuing ties with #Taiwan in the face of mounting diplomatic & economic coercion by #China. Our country will #StandWithLithuania while galvanizing support from across the free world for the courageous #EU state.”
