Taiwan to take part in Summit for Democracy

2021/12/10

Representatives from Taiwan’s public and civic sectors will take part in the Summit for Democracy to share the country’s related achievements with the free world, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Dec. 8.

Hosted by U.S. President Joe Biden, the Dec. 9 to 10 virtual event brings together leaders of the public, civic and private sectors from more than 100 countries and territories. Discussions will span such issues as resisting authoritarianism, fighting corruption and promoting human rights.

Minister without Portfolio Audrey Tang and Hsiao Bi-khim, head of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the U.S., will represent the government and people at the event. Other participants include senior officials from the MOFA and Ministries of Economic Affairs and Justice, as well as the National Security Council.

According to the MOFA, Tang will issue a national statement and take part in a Dec. 10 panel discussion hosted by Samantha Power, administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development, on countering digital authoritarianism and affirming democratic values. She will focus on sharing Taiwan’s success in using technology to enhance good governance, disarm disinformation, manage COVID-19 and promote public trust, the ministry added.

The MOFA said representatives from Taiwan Foundation for Democracy and Taiwan Association for Human Rights will join sessions on countering authoritarianism and protecting human rights, respectively, to shed light on the role of civic organizations in defending democratic values.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the ministry said “Don’t miss Digital Minister @audreyt & @TECRO_USA Rep. @bikhim representing #Taiwan & its 23.5 million people at the @POTUS-hosted #SummitForDemocracy. The gathering of forces for good from 100+ democratic countries will strive for cooperative solutions to shared challenges!”
