Foreign Minister Wu hosts welcome banquet for Slovakia delegation

2021/12/09

Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu hosted a welcome banquet for the Slovakia delegation Dec. 6 in Taipei City, underscoring the commitment of the government to deepening friendship and expanding exchanges between Taiwan and the EU member state.

Led by Karol Galek, state secretary of Slovakia’s Ministry of Economy, the 43-member group comprises officials, researchers, and industry and academic representatives. The delegation arrived Dec. 5 on a six-day visit centering on the First Session of the Taiwanese-Slovak Commission on Economic Cooperation.

According to Wu, Taiwan-Slovakia relations are going from strength to strength, citing his well-received keynote address at the GLOBSEC conference staged Oct. 26 in Slovakia.

Another example, Wu said, is the success of a trade and investment mission led by Kung Ming-hsin, minister of the National Development Council, the same month. In addition to staging 170 plus business matchmaking sessions, the two sides also concluded seven memorandum of understandings spanning a broad range of key areas, he added.

Wu also took the opportunity to thank Slovakia for the donation of COVID-19 vaccines earlier in the year. This friendly gesture touches the hearts of the people and is sincerely appreciated by all segments of society, he said.

In response, Galek extended his gratitude for the hospitality shown by officials and other locals, adding that it is an honor to helm the largest and highest-ranking visiting delegation since Slovakia opened a representative office in Taiwan. It is hoped the trip will enhance bilateral cooperation in education, core sectors, investment, scientific research, supply chain security and trade, he added.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “Long-term cooperation & partnerships of prosperity dominated table talk at the welcome banquet for the Slovak delegation hosted by Minister Wu. We’re grateful to have our friends from the freedom- & democracy-loving #EU member state in #Taiwan. Cheers to warming relations!”
