Former VP Chen shares Taiwan’s democratic achievements in Lithuania

2021/11/24

Former ROC (Taiwan) Vice President Chen Chien-jen said the country is fully committed to defending its free and democratic way of life while contributing to regional stability and global prosperity.

Taiwan is a beacon of democracy against threats and expansion of authoritarianism, with its successful experiences and practices serving as a litmus case in the Indo-Pacific, Chen said.

At a time when Taiwan and its democratic partners Australia and Lithuania are facing economic and political coercion from authoritarian regimes, Chen said, the unwavering support from other like-minded partners is sincerely appreciated by the government and people.

Chen made the remarks Nov. 20 during a keynote speech at the Future of Democracy forum staged by the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in capital Vilnius.

According to Chen, COVID-19 has highlighted Taiwan’s resilience as evidenced by successes in using technology and democratic principles to contain the spread of the disease.

Other examples include cooperating with like-minded partners in strengthening global supply chains for the high-tech and strategic sectors; using timely and transparent government information to stop the infiltration of disinformation; and enhancing public experience in responding to hybrid threats, Chen said.

All members of the free world are urged to work in unity, Chen said, so that treasured democratic values will continue to thrive.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “Ex-Vice President Chen’s keynote on #Taiwan’s democratic development at #FoDVilnius2021 in #Lithuania was a hit! He shared the country’s experiences & urged the free world to resist coercion. Our thanks to @ZygisPavilionis for the introduction & @LithuaniaMFA for the event.”
